Schlock Talk: freedom and exploitation cinema

Details

I pitched this Schlock Talk series to Ray awhile back, and I'm starting in an odd place with it! I was originally going to start with slasher films, and I decided to start elsewhere (mainly because my friend Jake who gifted me some slasher films for Christmas will be off at KublaCon for this initial foray), and also because of the open date that I found).

Memorial Day is about celebrating those who gave their lives for our freedoms of today. One of those freedoms is being able to watch subversive content that you just can't watch in any country. So it seems like watching exploitation cinema is a reasonable choice for this day. According to Cape Gazette.com, "Exploitation films helped break down the barrier of what can and can’t be shown on a film screen, allowing for more freedom in what major motion pictures can do." You can read that full article here:

There will be a horror film in this first scheduled mix (generally these events will be all horror films), and I also wanted to cast my net wide this time to gather a substantial vision of all of the exploitation genres. Here is the premiere schedule:

1 PM: a Nunsploitation / Sexsploitation title
2:30 PM: Late LUNCH at Lil Woody's Capitol Hill (Free Burger Day)
3:30 PM: a 90s Exploitation Horror Comedy
5 PM: TBD (the curator for this one is leaning Mockbuster)

While the event ends at 7 PM, we might consider going later for a guest pick or two, but we would need to eat again.

Schlock Talk FAQs

WHAT IS SCHLOCK TALK? This series is to be an intimate gathering of those who want to shape the direction of this group. One perk is that we can discuss this direction over food at nearby locations. Another perk is that we're going to get to watch lots of indie horror schlock, often themed (generally more narrow a theme than this initial outing)!

WHAT APARTMENT IS THIS EVENT AT? I will message attendees in Meetup with my phone number on the morning of the event. When you arrive at the listed location, you will call to be let in to the building by me. Please arrive at the beginning of the event so that we don't have to stop a film in the middle for me to come down and let you in!

CAN I BRING A FILM TO SHOW? If you have something in mind, you may suggest films for upcoming shlock talk themes when we are at dinner. Available format devices for playback at our location include DVD and Blu-ray (via PS3), laptop/desktop PC streaming via subscription services.

WHY THE SMALL ATTENDANCE CAP? Uncomfortably, our living room can fit about five people maximum! Counting myself and my roommate. If I already have planned additional attendees (especially friends who have not RSVPd yet), the cap will be smaller to reserve their place.
