Schlock Talk: The Films of Jess Franco

Details

In this event, we explore the cinematic world of Jess Franco, who, inspired by Hammer Films' The Brides Of Dracula, left behind the life of an established director, to make low budget exploitation horror movies and erotic films. He left his native country behind to avoid censorship and so that he could be free to explore the themes that he wanted to explore, which he did in around 170 films! We will examine a couple of his early horror films and will likely finish with one of the erotic ones, that final to be decided on by attendees.

Would you like to get a feel for Jess Franco's style to be more prepared for our discussion? You can watch Count Dracula, his adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, for free right now on Screambox:

Here is our schedule:
1 PM: a title that was intended to be a co-production of 6 countries!
2:30 PM: a horror drama with almost no dialogue!
4:00 PM: EARLY DINNER (potentially at Lost Lake, 1505 10th Ave)
5:30 PM: viewers' choice* of something erotic and sadistic that exemplifies Franco's exploratory journey

* It has to be a film that I haven't seen, but I've only seen four Jess Franco films, so there should still be plenty from which to choose!

Schlock Talk FAQs

WHAT IS SCHLOCK TALK? This series is to be an intimate gathering of those who want to shape the direction of this group. One perk is that we can discuss this direction over food at nearby locations. Another perk is that we're going to get to watch lots of horror schlock, often themed!

WHAT APARTMENT IS THIS EVENT AT? I will message attendees in Meetup with my phone number on the morning of the event. When you arrive at the listed location, you will call to be let in to the building by me. Please arrive at the beginning of the event so that we don't have to stop a film in the middle for me to come down and let you in!

CAN I BRING A FILM TO SHOW? If you have something in mind, you may suggest films for upcoming shlock talk themes when we are at dinner. Available format devices for playback at our location include DVD and Blu-ray (via PS3), laptop/desktop PC streaming via subscription services.

WHY THE SMALL ATTENDANCE CAP? Uncomfortably, our living room can fit about five people maximum! Counting myself and my roommate. If I already have planned additional attendees (especially friends who have not RSVPd yet), the cap will be smaller to reserve their place.
