### 🌍 What makes a site “World Heritage”?

To qualify, a place must be unique, irreplaceable, and globally significant in at least one of these ways:

  • Cultural – historic cities, monuments, architecture, archaeological sites
  • Natural – landscapes, forests, mountains, coastlines, ecosystems
  • Mixed – places that are both culturally and naturally significant

***

### 🏛️ Why it matters

  • Recognizes our shared human history and natural wonders
  • Encourages preservation and responsible tourism
  • Helps protect sites from damage, neglect, or overdevelopment
  • These places belong to everyone, not just the country where they’re located

***

### 🌎 Examples you might recognize

  • Historic city centers
  • Ancient ruins
  • National parks
  • Sacred landscapes
  • Traditional agricultural regions
