Trip Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Another moonlight paddle. This time we're heading to Monroe Lake at the Cartop State Recreation Area. We will be paddling mostly in a no-wake zone but some may want to venture out to the main body of the lake to experience some wave action.

We will meet at 6:00pm and try to be on the water by 6:30pm. The sun sets around 8:55pm so we will have three hours of daylight to paddle. The moon rises about 4:20pm so we should have good light, barring any clouds. We will be on the water about four hours.

Carpool/Caravan Info: If anybody wants to carpool or caravan to the launch site from Indianapolis please meet at Focus Therapeutic Massage at 8711 Southeastern Ave., Indianapolis 46239. We will be leaving no later 4pm.

Special Safety Considerations: Be sure to have a headlamp or flashlight. The law requires you have to have a white light visible for two miles. A glow stick or beacon light is nice to have attached to your PFD to make you visible in the darkness. Since it is easy to become disoriented in the darkness everybody is required to wear their PFDs while on the water. For additional safety, please pick a paddling buddy and stay together.

Rentals: For Kayak rentals call Paul at 317-319-7107. Single seat kayaks are $50 for this event. The price includes boat, PFD, paddle and delivery to the launch site.

Suggested items to bring: Wide brimmed hat, sun block, hand sanitizer, sunglasses, large sponge, bilge pump or container to bail out water, water, snacks, towel, change of clothes, water shoes, paddling gloves, rain gear, bug spray, safety whistle, camera, flashlight/headlamp, a sense of adventure, and a good dose of humor. For clothing try to use something other than cotton, especially if the weather is cool. Polypropylene or polyester are good choices since neither holds water and they wick moisture away from you.

* Due to paddling at night, you MUST wear your PFD and you MUST have some form of light on you or your boat for this trip
* This event is on IN-DNR property, so regulations require your boat to have a current Non-Motorized Boat Permit decal. They are available at most state parks or you can purchase one online or at the downtown Indy office for $5.
