Socratic discussion: Know Thyself

Socratic discussion: Know Thyself

Details

Discussion questions:

1. What does it mean to have self-knowledge or "know thyself"? How would one go about acquiring this knowledge?
2. Socrates learns from an oracle at Delphi that he's the wisest man, and he later realizes that his wisdom comes from his knowing that he knows nothing. Does this realization help us become wiser? How?
3. Over time, Socrates's reputation suffers as he goes on his personal journey of seeking wisdom while showing other people that they're not as wise as they think. What importance, if any, does reputation play in becoming wise or happy? How might a wise person cultivate or rehabilitate their reputation?
4. What does he mean when he says in Apology that "the unexamined life is not worth living"? How might self-examination serve us in living lives worth living? What would a fruitful self-examination process look like?
