- Safety Responsibility
While Event Organizers provide a framework for your Meetup experience, you are responsible for your own safety and well-being. By signing up for our Meetups, you acknowledge and agree that hiking, outdoor activities and any of our Meetups carry the risk of injury or even death, and that you accept those risks. Further, you understand and accept this disclaimer and agree not to bring any type of claim against the Event Organizers, James River Hikers or other participants. - Trail Contention
We will have to share the trails as they are very popular. When a biker or runner is observed approaching from the direction opposite to our line of travel we call out "Biker/Runner Up" to alert the goup to make room for this faster moving traffic. If the traffic is overtaking our group, call out "Biker/Runner Back". We will stop and move to the side of the trail when this happens.
- Participation
Members who don't attend at least one Meetup for over a year after joining may be terminated.
- Heat Considerations
As the days become longer, heat becomes a factor.
EOs will do what they can to advise and assist you, but ultimately you are responsible for your own well-being. You need to be aware of your physical capabilities, heat tolerance & comfort level and act accordingly to protect yourself.
The general guideline for hikes in that if it predictably will be 85° F or more the hike will be canceled. Other EOs may use different criteria.
While the following may be obvious, they are worth repeating now that the HOT season is upon us.
1. Be sure you have water. Drinking a bottle before the hike and carrying another is encouraged.
2. If when exercising you wait to drink until you are thirsty it’s already too late for your body to recover in a healthy way.
3. Be aware of these symptoms of heat related illnesses:
https://www.webmd.com/first-aid/understanding-heat-related-illness-symptoms
4. If you find either yourself or observe a fellow hiker beginning to exhibit any of the traits noted in the above attachment don't hesitate to immediately stop and ask for help.
5. Scheduling outdoor events either early or late in the day is a way we attempt to work around the heat.
