Details

This is anticipated to be a 3.3 mile hike. The good news is this meets all the criteria for an urban hike. There is no requirement to be able to ford a stream, or possess the ability to recognize toxic plants, negotiate rocks, roots, fallen trees, damp trail conditions, stairs, steep ascents, vines, low hanging branches, culverts, uncertain footing on hills, reptiles, spider webs, scorpions, birds of prey, or migratory waterfowl.

Meet at the parking area on Shields Lake Dr. (just north of the Maymont Nature Center) and take a leisurely hike through part of Byrd Park and the Carillon neighborhood. We'll pass Swan Lake and Fountain Lake before crossing South Arthur Ashe Blvd to follow S. Belmont Ave through the Carillon neighborhood. At the site if the ill fated Blue Shingles we'll turn for our starting point at Shields Lake.
If you are unfamiliar with the meet up location and parking availability, add a few minutes to your travel schedule so you can find us.
If you don't have a clue about the location of Shields Lake, click on the link located just above "How to Find Us" in the event description. An interactive map will be displayed and when "Directions" (left) is selected the best route from your current location to the Meet Up rendezvous spot will be calculated for you. Before the hike be sure to place anything that might invite theft in your trunk before you leave your car parked while you are hiking.

Participants should be able to maintain a pace of 2.5 miles per hour. The parking area we will use is readily identifiable and you should have no trouble locating it. You have probably passed it many times. This is a dog friendly hike.
