Today's 4.2 mile hike takes us along one of the most scenic parts of the North Bank Trail. We will pass the Japanese Gardens and the bear exhibit at Maymont, pass the historic Pump House and reach the little known and often under appreciated Washington's Arch. Then we'll start the return trip through Maymont back to the North Bank Trail.

This is a hike over relatively flat terrain that should take approximately two and a half hours to complete! Some ability to negotiate tree roots, rustic trails, low hanging vines, toxic plants, culverts, reptiles, damp trail conditions, steep stairs, spider webs, fallen trees, scorpions, birds of prey, migratory waterfowl, and river rocks is desirable. Hiking sticks are recommended though not required.
All hikes begin at the posted time, not five or ten minutes later. If you are unfamiliar with the meet up location, add a few minutes to your travel schedule so you will not be left behind. Click on the small map (=>) at the right to display a larger interactive map. If you select "Directions" (upper left) a detailed route from your location to the Meet Up rendezvous spot will be provided. Before the hike be sure to take a minute and place everything that might invite theft in your trunk before you leave your car parked while you are hiking.
The passage through Riverview Cemetery can be perplexing to first time visitors. The image of the route map for the hike also has a clearly marked way to arrive at the Meet Up location without too much anxiety!
Be sure to hydrate before, during and after the hike. The combination of temperature and humidity in Richmond in the summertime can sneak up on you!
