We'll start this 6.1 mile trek at the North end of the Nickel Bridge and head east past the Maymont bear enclosure and Japanese Gardens. We'll pass the construction at the Texas Beach pedestrian bridge and make our way around Riverview Cemetery and Hollywood Cemetery to the Lee Bridge.
Here we will cross the river and access the Buttermilk Trail as we make our way west. We'll pass by the trail's namesake, Reedy Creek Landing and some of James Netherwood's quarries. Eventually we'll reach the Nickel Bridge and cross the river back to our starting point.
As with all hikes, this one begins at the posted time, not five or ten minutes later. If you are unfamiliar with the meet up location, add a few minutes to your travel schedule so you will not arrive at an empty parking lot (seriously). Some ability to negotiate tree roots, rustic trails, low hanging vines, toxic plants, culverts, reptiles, damp trail conditions, stairs, spider webs, fallen trees, scorpions, skunks, migratory waterfowl, and river rocks is desirable. Hiking sticks, a staff or somebody to lean on are strongly recommended as there are three minor stream crossings on the western section of the Buttermilk Trail.
Use the inset map (See "How to Find Us") in the event description get directions if this location is not familiar to you.
After the hike, interested hikers can stop at O'Toole's for lunch or a refreshing beverage.
