May 14, 9 AM - Riverview Cemetery to Virginia War Memorial Hike

• We will access the North Bank Trail at 37°31'49.1"N 77°27'39.2"W from Riverview Cemetery and follow it east to the Virginia War Memorial for today's 3.8 mile hike, most of which will be on riverside trails and an urban environment. Some ability to negotiate rocky trails, roots, steep descents and narrow passages is required.

Our route may take us through Hollywood Cemetery (if the back gate is open) to the Iron Dog statue, one of the most poignant memorials you will ever see, and the Oregon Hill neighborhood. After a brief stop at the War Memorial we will return to the starting point via the North Bank Trail.

All hikes begin at the posted time, not five or ten minutes later. If you are unfamiliar with the meet up location, add a few minutes to your travel schedule so you will not be left behind. Click on the ARROW (see "How to Find Us") in the event description to display an interactive map. When you select "Directions" (on the left) a detailed route from your location to the Meet Up rendezvous spot will be provided. Before the hike be sure to take a minute and place everything that might invite theft in your trunk before you leave your car parked while you are hiking.

Participants should be able to maintain a pace of twenty-five minutes per mile. Although some of this hike is urban in nature, participants should still possess the ability to recognize toxic plants, negotiate rocks, roots, fallen trees, damp trail conditions, stairs, steep ascents, low hanging vines and branches, culverts, uncertain footing on hills, spider webs, scorpions, birds of prey, migratory waterfowl, reptiles, skunks and stairways. . While your event host is providing a framework for your Meet Up hiking experience, you are responsible for your own safety and well-being.
