What we’re about

Welcome to the City of Art!
We are a community of people from different cities and countries who have come together to exchange languages and perspectives. Each of us has faced the challenge of learning a new language, and that shared experience makes it easier to connect, support one another, and build meaningful conversations.
Our events are designed for mutual benefit — everyone contributes in their own way, whether through listening, sharing, or exploring ideas across cultures. Alongside language practice, we often touch on literature, global issues, and the arts, reflecting the diverse interests of our members.
If you’re new to this city and curious to join, we’d be glad to welcome you. Our subgroups include Central L.A. Language Exchange and Mandarin Beginners’ Haven.

English Language Events
We highlight the diverse English dialects spoken by non‑local members, which many learners find valuable. We are also exploring English‑default events in suburban areas in the future.

Chinese / Mandarin Language Events
Beginners are welcome! Our focus is on the 汉字 writing system rather than only pinyin. Some familiarity helps, but enthusiasm and steady effort matter most.

Japanese Language Events
Japanese remains a popular language in our community. We welcome both English and Japanese speakers to join our gatherings. These are family‑safe events, and under‑age participants must be accompanied by a parent.

Korean Language Events
These events often focus on practical knowledge about life in Seoul and other Korean cities. If you’ve lived or worked in Korea in recent years, it’s a great way to meet others with similar experiences.

Group’s Goal
• Facilitating offline gatherings and hosting a safe, respectful language‑oriented community.
• Exploring languages that use Kanji or related scripts.
• Hosting family‑safe events where whole families can join.
• Welcoming new visitors and travelers who are not local to the city.

Community Standards & Participation
To keep our gatherings meaningful and comfortable for everyone, we ask members to follow these guidelines:
• Respectful Conduct
Treat others with courtesy. Behavior that makes others uncomfortable, or that exploits the group or Meetup’s platform, may result in removal.
• Attendance
If you RSVP, please attend — or cancel at least 6 hours before the event so others can join. Repeated no‑shows or casual RSVPs without intent to participate may lead to removal.
• Active Participation
For events like language exchanges or similar activities, we ask everyone to join in at their own level — listening and speaking — so the experience is mutually rewarding. Silent observation without contribution is not appropriate, as it undermines the purpose of the event and makes others uncomfortable.
• Commitment to Learning
We welcome all levels, but we ask for sincerity. Joining only to “pretend” interest without genuine effort is unfair to others. Members are expected to contribute at their own level, whether beginner or advanced, so that everyone benefits.
• Privacy & Boundaries
Our events are not dating or social parties. Unsolicited personal questions, invitations outside the group’s activities, or behavior that disrupts the group’s focus are not appropriate.
• Alignment with Group Goals
We emphasize a safe, studious, and non‑dating environment. Members whose behavior is incompatible with this purpose may be asked to leave.
