Sumi-e is a traditional Japanese art form that uses only brushes and ink. From a calligrapher’s perspective, it is quite unique. While most paintings use a variety of colours, Sumi-e expresses everything through different shades of black ink, created simply by adjusting the balance of ink and water.

This creates a beautiful contrast between soft grey tones and deep black lines.
At first glance, it may seem complicated, but there’s no need to worry. I will guide you step by step—not only how to paint, but also how to truly enjoy the fascinating world of Sumi-e.

This season, our theme is Sakura-dai (cherry blossom sea bream).
In Japan, Sakura-dai is especially enjoyed in spring, as its soft pink colour resembles cherry blossoms. Because of this, it has long been associated with the arrival of the season and new beginnings.
Sea bream is also considered a symbol of celebration and good fortune in Japanese culture. It is often served at special occasions such as weddings and festivals, and is popular as sushi and in traditional dishes.

By choosing Sakura-dai as our subject, we connect art with seasonality, culture, and meaning—something deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetics.
Why not explore the beauty of ink and water, and experience a piece of Japan through Sumi-e?
