  • Discover Light, Color, and Texture in South Dakota

Instructional Photo Safari limited to 8 photographers

    Instructor: Jason Odell
    www.luminescentphoto.com

2017 marks my 7th consecutive year of leading landscape photography safaris in South Dakota! I hope you'll join me to explore fine-art landscape photography techniques in an environment that can only be described as surreal. We will explore light, texture and clouds over the tremendous rock formations that have formed from erosion over the last 500,000 years.

You'll be treated to some amazing sunrises and sunsets and rock formations that could be mistaken for the moon. This safari is the perfect setting for photographers who not only want to photograph spectacular scenery, but also learn the behind the scenes techniques for processing and workflow, including HDR, infrared, and long exposures.

Each day, we will have the opportunity download and process our images together as a group, get critiques, and learn new techniques to make your photos into fine-art masterpieces. I will work with you to capture and process the best possible images into beautiful finished products.

    When: September 17-21, 2017

Where: Wall, South Dakota (Nearest Airport: Rapid City, SD (RAP), about a 1.5 hour drive from Wall.)
I have reserved rooms  for the group for $65/night in Wall, SD; I will provide you with that information separately.

    Instructional Fee*: $1149 per photographer

A $250 refundable deposit is due on May 1, 2017 to confirm your space
The remaining balance is due July 18th, 2017 (non-refundable unless I back-fill your space)

*The Instructional Fee includes all field and classroom instruction and image critique/review sessions.

Please Note: Meals, lodging, and transportation to the field locations are not included in the workshop fee and are the responsibility of each individual. Individuals are responsible for admission to the park ($15 per vehicle, or valid National Park pass).

    Minimum Group Size: 4 Photographers
    Maximum Group Size: 8 Photographers

Experience Level: This safari is best for intermediate to advanced photographers looking to create fine-art photographs and learn new techniques.  You should have a working knowledge of your camera equipment and the fundamentals of exposure, but by no means do you need to be an expert.

    General Itinerary
Our locations will depend on prevailing conditions and will change from day to day depending on the situation. Our itinerary requires flexibility so that I can put you at the best possible location.

Day 1: Meet in hotel lobby at 2 pm local time for an orientation session and presentation. We will then photograph sunset in the Badlands.

Days 2-4: Morning and evening shooting sessions in the Badlands (locations determined by conditions) Mid-day, I will hold open image review sessions and offer over the shoulder processing/workflow assistance to all participants. I find that when we work on our images together, participants learn more than they'd get from a static presentation. Topics to include Lightroom, Photoshop, HDR, Panoramas, Infrared (you name it).

Day 5: Sunrise shooting session. Workshop concludes at 10am. Participants can explore the Badlands on their own if desired, or visit other spots nearby.
