What we’re about
Join our community-driven meetup in Vienna about everything in and around complex Java software projects. We strongly believe that exchanging ideas, discussing challenges, and exploring new features are key to progress as software engineers and enabling project success. Our discussions aren't limited to Java—we also dive into adjacent topics like software architecture, event-driven systems, or cloud infrastructure. Held at different local venues, our events prioritize open exchange and learning over being always right. All levels are welcome!

👂 Talks:
🗣️ Rainer Burgstaller
Java Modularization Strategies: Spring Modulith vs. Gradle Subprojects
🗣️ Martin Schwarz
Applied Hexagonal Architectures🧑💻 Speakers:
Martin Schwarz is a software engineer at andamp, a Vienna-based software consulting company. He is driven by curiosity about technology, building products people love, and learning new things. His daily work revolves around helping clients to evolve their systems and structures. He has worked for clients in the insurance and banking industry, and most recently helped build the platform Schulstart for the social ministry of Austria, providing around 50.000 welfare recipients digital access to their benefits. In this talk, Martin will explore how to apply hexagonal architecture pragmatically, demonstrating that with minimal guidelines and modern IDE tooling, you can achieve significant decoupling benefits without excessive overhead. Through real-world examples and refactoring demonstrations, we'll examine when hexagonal architecture provides value—particularly with multiple external dependencies—and when it might be overkill.
Rainer Burgstaller is passionate about developer productivity and always strives to find the best tool for the job. Pursuing this, he came across a wide variety of tools, methodologies, and programming languages in his career so far. Right now, he works at Gofore in the Node/Typescript/JavaScript ecosystem on frontend and backend. If there is any recent tool in that space, he has probably used it already.
In the past and still today, he is also quite proficient in the Spring/Java/Kotlin/Hibernate stack, and he tries to keep up to date.
While he is not doing any of the above, he is coaching co-workers and writing blog posts about software development. And last but not least, he also runs the DevOps and Software Engineering eCops (communities of practice).
When he is not doing any of the above, you can probably find him on one of Austria's windy lakes kitesurfing. His talk will be about how modular architectures in Java projects can be implemented efficiently. He will compare two approaches: Spring Modulith, which brings modular structures and documentation directly into Spring applications, and a custom modularization with Gradle subprojects, offering maximum flexibility but requiring more effort to maintain. We’ll explore the pros and cons of both strategies and discuss best practices for building well-structured, maintainable, and extensible moduliths.
