Movie Description:
“Sergeant York” (1941) is a Biography, Drama, based on the life of Alvin C. York. This film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won 5, including Best Actor - Gary Cooper. It’s Directed and Produced by Howard Hawks. York is a highly decorated WWI War Hero. He kept a very in-depth diary dating back from his childhood which is what the film is based on.
As York’s name became famous, he received offers for his movie rights and denied them all. It took many years for him to allow the film’s production in 1941. York used his earnings to finance a Bible School. He specifically requested Gary Copper to portray him. Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan team up for one of their 8 films they released together. In 2008, Sergeant York was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Congress as being culturally, historically or aesthetically significant. the film was selected for preservation
