Charlie Porter - trumpet

As a multi-genre trumpeter, Charlie has a rich diversity of experience ranging from performing with small & large jazz ensembles to performing classical solos, chamber music and orchestral literature with major symphony orchestras.

Charlie has toured throughout most of the United States and abroad in Europe, Asia, the Baltic States, the Middle East and Africa as both a bandleader and as a sideman with musicians such as Joe Zawinul & Paquito D'Rivera. In addition to his own quartet being selected twice by Jazz at Lincoln Center to tour abroad as part of the Rhythm Road, he toured a third time as a member of the JALC All-Star Quartet. He currently holds the trumpet chair in Chuck Israels Jazz Orchestra and The Alan Jones Sextet (both based in Portland, OR).

In classical musical settings he has performed regularly with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and The American Symphony Orchestra as well holding the solo trumpet chair in the Absolute Ensemble since 1997, who's recent album "Bach Reinvented" was nominated for a Grammy Award. Charlie also toured the U.S. extensively with the internationally acclaimed Dallas Brass in their 2009/10 season, playing both trumpet and Eb alto horn. Hey currently performs as part of the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival.

Throughout Charlie’s extensive travels, he has gained experience in performing for a wide variety of communities and fostering cultural exchange with local musicians and audiences. As one of the former resident groups in Carnegie Hall’s “Musical Connections” program, Charlie's quartet performed for disadvantaged audiences through the NYC area and was featured on CBS This Morning.

As a composer Charlie was commissioned by Chamber Music America and The Doris Duke Foundation in 2005 to compose “The Buddy Bolden Suite” for his jazz septet, which was then premiered at The Jazz Gallery and JALC’s Dizzy’s Club to sold-out crowds.

Among the many awards to his credit, he was the first ever to be awarded 1st Prize in the National Trumpet Competition in both Jazz and Classical divisions and was a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition in Los Angeles. As a freshman at Juilliard, Charlie won the quadrennial Trumpet Concerto Competition and performed as a soloist with the Juilliard Orchestra at Allice Tully Hall, NYC.

Charlie holds a Bachelor's degree from The Juilliard School in classical trumpet performance and a Master's degree from Manhattan School of Music in jazz performance. His mentors have included Wynton Marsalis, Raymond Mase, Mark Gould, Laurie Frink, Dominic Derasse, Cecil Bridgewater, Sy Pryweller & Wayne Daniels.

A recent transplant to the West Coast, Charlie performs in Portland, Seattle and Vancouver and teaches regularly.

Dan Gaynor - piano

A native of Portland, pianist Dan Gaynor has performed with many artists including Nancy King, Esperanza Spalding, Chuck Israels, Glen Moore, Gino Vannelli, Martin Zarzar, Bob Mover, Bobby Torres, Emily Braden, Dan Faehnle, Marguerite Jeunemann, David Friesen, Kelly Joe Phelps, Alan Jones, Lawrence Williams, Rob Scheps, Robert Moore, John Stowell, Ingrid Jensen, Ron Steen, Mel Brown, "Sweet Baby" James Benton, Chris Conrade, Dick Berk, Marianne Solivan, Shirley Nanette and many others. He studied jazz and music theory at Mt. Hood Community College and Portland State University with teachers including Randy Porter, Dave Barduhn, Darrell Grant, Glen Moore and Tomas Svoboda. Dan is also a versatile vocal accompanist, with a wide repertoire and experience in many musical styles. He is recorded on on Good Morning Geek by the Portland Jazz Orchestra, En Route by Ed Bennett and on both Libre and Two Dollars to Ride the Train by Martin Zarzar.

Charlie Doggett - drums

Charlie Doggett was born in Oregon and began playing drums at an early age. His first paying job as a musician was at the age 15. Up to this point Doggett was mostly self taught and he credits his uncle, (who played trumpet), with showing him how to hold the drumsticks. His first formal teachers were at the University of Oregon and included drummers Chris Lee, Alan Jones, and pianist Gary Versace.

Upon graduating from the U of O, Doggett was employed by both the University of Oregon and Lane Community College teaching drum set and percussion. He later relocated to Portland Oregon where he currently resides.

Doggett has performed extensively throughout the Northwest, West Coast, Canada, and Europe. He is a member of Upper Left Trio, a group comprised of pianist Clay Giberson and bassist Jeff Leonard. This piano trio has been together for nearly a decade and has four releases to date on the Origin Arts Label… "Cycling", "Sell Your Soul Side", "Three", and "Ulternative".

Doggett is a member of the David Friesen Trio, and the David Friesen Quintet. Recordings include "Five and Three", released in 2009, and the soon to be released, 2013, "Brilliant Heart".

He is also a member of the Superjazzers, a quartet led by saxophonist Tim Willcox. Other members include pianist David Goldblatt, and bassist Bill Athens. This adventurous quartet released it's debut recording in 2011 entitled, "Superjazzers Vol. 1", thus launching the independent jazz record label Ninjazz Records.

Some other ensembles of note include a spectacular trio with tenor saxophone legend John Gross and internationally acclaimed pianist/lyricist/composer Dave Frishberg. The trio has one release to date entitled, "Strange Feeling". Another fantastic band of note is The Two Tenors and Dave Frishberg - a quintet inspired by and dedicated to the music of Al Cohn and Zoot Sims. This band is fronted by tenors David Evans-(leader), and Lee Wuthenow. Dave Frishberg, Tom Wakeling and Charlie Doggett round out the rhythm section.

Additionally, Doggett has had the privilege of performing with many other wonderful musicians including Charles McPherson, Randy Porter, Ralph Bowen, Rich Perry, John Stowell, Poncho Sanchez, Darrell Grant, Obo Addy, Titos Sampa, Steve Christofferson, Glen Moore, Gary Versace, Dan Balmer, and many others.

John Lakey - bass

By the age of 7, Jonathan was already pursuing music and performance in many arenas. After mastering piano, he moved on to percussion, electric bass, saxophone, clarinet and acoustic bass... all by the time he was 21.

Jonathan has played gigs all over the world, from Seattle, WA to Vannes, France. He currently resides here in Portland where he's kept busy as a professional bass player, composer and educator. Jonathan has been a part of the Alan Jones Academy of Music since the summer of 2011.

David Evans - tenor sax

David Evans began playing professionally around the Southeast in his early teens. A scholarship to Loyola University brought him to New Orleans in 1984, where he played with local legends like Pete Fountain, Johnny Vidacovich and Luther Kent, and national acts like Johnny Mathis, Gladys Knight, The Four Tops, The Temptations and many others.

From 1986 to 1994, David was musical director on board the National Historic Landmark steamboat Delta Queen, performing as well as preparing special programs on different periods of American music for groups from The Smithsonian, Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and the Center for the Study of Southern Culture, and backing special guests like B. B. King and Mose Allison.

A resident of Portland, Oregon since 1994, he has performed or recorded with Bill Bachmann, Dan Balmer, Dan Barrett, Mel Brown, Steve Christofferson, Dave Frishberg, Jim Goodwin, Tom Grant, Allen Hinds, Rebecca Kilgore, Nancy King, Joe La Barbera, Storm Large, Glen Moore, Randy Porter, Todd Strait, Jay Thomas, The Chuck Israels Orchestra, Portland Chamber Orchestra, Bridgetown Sextet, Midnight Serenaders and many others.
