JCI Sydney Book Club – Third Meeting: Leadership on the Line: Staying Alive through the Dangers of Leading by Ronald A. Heifetz

For our third JCI Sydney Book Club meeting, we’re diving into Leadership on the Line: Staying Alive through the Dangers of Leading. To lead is to live dangerously. It's romantic and exciting to think of leadership as all inspiration, decisive action, and rich rewards, but leading requires taking risks that can jeopardize your career and your personal life. It requires putting yourself on the line, disturbing the status quo, and surfacing hidden conflict. And when people resist and push back, there's a strong temptation to play it safe.

Those who choose to lead plunge in, take the risks, and sometimes get burned. But it doesn't have to be that way say renowned leadership authorities Ronald Heifetz and Marty Linsky. In Leadership on the Line, they show how it's possible to make a difference without getting "taken out" or pushed aside. They present everyday tools that give equal weight to the dangerous work of leading change and the critical importance of personal survival. Through vivid stories from all walks of life, the authors present straightforward strategies for navigating the perilous straits of leadership. Whether parent or politician, CEO or community activist, this practical book shows how you can exercise leadership and survive and thrive to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
Everyone is welcome—whether you're reading the book for the first time or just want to join the conversation. At this meeting, we’ll explore themes of the dangerous work of leadership, staying connected to the people you're leading and the importance of maintaining the holding environment.

About the book club:
The JCI Sydney Book Club is an open and inclusive space for emerging and established leaders to come together, read, reflect, and grow. Guided by the tagline “Turning Readers into Leaders,” the club focuses on books that inspire leadership, spark meaningful discussion, and challenge members to think critically about their personal and professional development.
Each month, we explore a different title that dives into leadership principles, real-world challenges, and transformational ideas—from classic texts to modern thought-leaders. Whether you're new to leadership or looking to sharpen your skills, this club offers a supportive environment to exchange perspectives, share experiences, and learn from others.
Through regular meetups and interactive discussions, the JCI Sydney Book Club empowers participants to take what they learn off the page and into action. It's more than just reading—it’s about becoming. Connect with like-minded people, build your confidence, and expand your network as you develop your leadership journey one book at a time.
Join us, be inspired, and discover how every great leader starts with a great read.
