Monthly Meeting - The Unfinished Tale of Two Republics

Details

This month, Bob Gaskill will offer his talk, The Unfinished Tale of Two Republics.

This presentation provides a way to understand the divisiveness we experience in the world today as it appears through the lens of the Roman Republic. It takes us back to that period in history when the Roman Republic began her decline. Bob will describe the cultural and economic changes the led to the precipice of that decline and chronicle the political events of one dramatic and violent year that tipped her over the edge launching her fall, a ride that took over a century to play out. The nature of these events constitutes a significant segment of the parallels our two republics share and leads to the question of whether America might continue to follow the Roman trajectory all the way to her own Fall. Returning to the present, messages from three authors provide insight into the reasons America, like Rome, has become so divided. Bob will conclude his presentation with collective advice from these authors of ways to have productive discussions with those who have opposing views.

Bob is a Colorado native and graduated from Colorado State University and grad schools at Iowa State and Case Western Reserve, finishing with a PhD in Electrical and Systems Engineering. He enjoyed a long career at the National Security Agency (NSA).

SCHEDULE

We will serve appetizers from 4:00 to 4:30, then start the program. A small donation is suggested for the food, and wine will be served for a $3 donation. The program will include announcements and a Humanist Moment before the presentation begins.

We hope to see you at 4:00 pm, on Sunday, May 28th, at Jefferson Unitarian Church! It is an in-person-only event.

This program is hosted by Jefferson Humanists, a chapter of the American Humanist Association.

“Striking similarities between Rome and America have inspired many historians and commentators to make comparisons, and many have drawn pessimistic conclusions. However, our fate is not predetermined; our choices will determine our future. We have the advantage over the Romans of knowing how their history unfolded, and we have the opportunity to avoid their mistakes.” ― Walter Signorelli, Rome and America: the Great Republics: What the Fall of the Roman Republic Portends for the United States

HHH Change for Change Drive during May and June Monthly Meetings
CHANGE FOR CHANGE: SHARE YOUR SMALL CHANGE TO MAKE A BIG CHANGE.

Have you been hoarding your spare change with the intention to cash it in and put it to use one day? Now's your chance. Humanists Helping Humanity (HHH), the social action arm of Jefferson Humanists, have a great opportunity to put that spare change to work to make a big change in the lives of the LGBTQ and broader metro community. To help celebrate Pride Fest Denver in June, we invite you to contribute your spare change and other monetary donations to our Change for Change drive. All money collected goes to support Gay for Good Denver (https://gayforgood.org/denver/). Gay For Good Denver mobilizes lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ+) and ally volunteers to promote diversity, foster inclusion and strengthen ties to the broader Denver community. GFG Denver facilitates welcoming, inclusive service projects in support of a wide range of causes throughout Denver and the surrounding areas.

Bring your spare change to the Jefferson Unitarian Church at 4pm on May 28th and June 25th and help us fill our 5 gallon change jug. It is estimated that filling one 5 gallon water jug with change can equal $800 or more.

Unable to make it to our May and June meetings to make a donation? A credit card donation can be made online at: https://tinyurl.com/JH-Donation (Input your donation under HHH Donation and note Change for Change in the box to the right of your donation.)

Jefferson Humanists is a 501(c)3 nonprofit and all proceeds collected during CHANGE FOR CHANGE will go to Gay for Good Denver.
