JH Monthly Meeting: Democratizing AI Before It’s Too Late

Details

Jefferson Humanists hosts Ralph Hughes for his talk, "Democratizing AI Before It’s Too Late." AI is a gathering storm.

Society will need to retool to accommodate this force that will soon be far more capable than all humans combined. Many pundits fear that AI will undermine society with mass layoffs and tireless surveillance.

But what if “we the people” worked to use AI to keep AI in check? What if we were to empower ourselves with AI and use it to organize politically? Could we get “a seat at the table” and demand a responsible deployment of this new and incredibly powerful technology? Could we then ensure our future will be more of a “fully automated luxury communism” than a scarcity-driven “techno-feudalism”?

With this presentation, we’ll have a chance to envision an AI made by the people and for the people. We’ll consider how such an implementation would provide us with trustworthy information and lift us out of the post-truth, political stalemate that’s driving our ongoing national decline.

About The Speaker:
Ralph Hughes trained in economics and business forecasting at Stanford and is now a retired business intelligence consultant. Author of three books on database design and project management, he’s a volunteer instructor on AI and political economy for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Currently he is working on a fourth book that outlines the dangers of generative AI and illustrates how the public could better participate in determining its impact upon society.

This program is hosted by Jefferson Humanists, a chapter of the American Humanist Association.

Please RSVP on this Meetup or email RSVP@jeffersonhumanists.org so we are sure to set up enough chairs for our audience.

SCHEDULE
We will serve snacks and refreshments from 4:00 to 4:30, with a chance to meet our speaker, then start the program. A small donation of $3 is suggested for the wine or beer. The program will include announcements and a Humanist Moment before the presentation begins.

We hope to see you at 4:00 pm, on Sunday, May 25th, at Jefferson Unitarian Church! This is an in-person-only event.
