Welcome back to JC-JUG! Our April presenters will be Cat Swetel and Heidi Mitre.

About the speakers:

Heidi Mitre is an experienced back-end Software Engineer with a passion for developing resilient systems. At Ticketmaster she built scaleable Kafka Streams applications in Java to transform and store high-volume ticketing system data. More recently at Verica, she has helped design and build a Continuous Verification solution for Kafka to inform engineers about the safety boundaries of their systems. In her spare time, she enjoys PC gaming, riding motorcycles, and going to concerts (which she hopes to be able to do again soon!).

Cat Swetel is a technology leader deeply interested in exploring how digital transformation facilitates relationships and could create conditions for more generative institutions. In addition to leadership experience in a variety of settings from startups to large enterprises, Cat is also an accomplished public speaker delivering keynotes, workshops, etc all around the world. In her leisure time, Cat enjoys cooking, hiking, making jokes about Bitcoin, and reading feminist literature.

About the presentation:

As technologists, our work is increasingly situated in highly complex socio-technical ecosystems. As much as we are encouraged to retrospectively seek a distinct and absolute root cause for an incident or outage, these complex systems are much more likely to drift into failure rather than suddenly taking one catastrophic wrong turn. What if you and your colleagues could be sensitized to the drifting safety boundaries of your systems? How would that inform the work you do? Join this session to explore these ideas through an introduction — with Java-oriented examples — to the important new discipline of continuous verification.
