Margaret Chase was a woman of firsts. In 1940 she was the first women elected from the State of Maine to serve in Congress. Nine years later she was the first woman from her state elected to the Senate. And In 1950 she became the first woman to stand on the Senate floor and publicly rebuke Senator McCarthy.

She ran for US President.
She is one of only two women to have a room in the US Congress named after her
