Introduction to LGBTQ+ Terms & Concepts
Thursday June 26 @ 8 PM on Zoom
Presented by Jackie Maris
Keshet Education and Training Manager
What is the difference between sex, gender, and sexual orientation? How do they apply to Jewish life? And how do pronouns and neopronouns tie into this? How do we create an LGBTQ+ affirming environment for all congregants and community members? The program focuses on building shared vocabulary and awareness around LGBTQ+ identities and finding ways in which we can build a community of equality and belonging for LGBTQ+ people.
Not too long ago, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Jews were largely invisible in American Jewish life. Marriage equality wasn’t on anyone’s radar — certainly not on the radar of most synagogues and Jewish organizations. Founded in 1996, Keshet is now a national organization with offices in the Bay Area, Chicago, New York, in addition to its headquarters in Boston. It is the only organization in the U.S. that works for LGBTQ+ equality in all facets of Jewish life — synagogues, Hebrew schools, day schools, youth groups, summer camps, social-service organizations and other communal agencies. Keshet has developed the leadership of LGBTQ+ Jewish teens, trained Jewish educators to prevent anti-LGBTQ+ bullying and celebrate LGBTQ+ Jewish identity, and mobilized Jewish communities to protect marriage equality and transgender rights.
