Practical AI for data journalism with Hugging Face

Details

This month we'll be learning how to use artificial intelligence for practical data journalism tasks using Hugging Face.

Hugging Face is a popular machine learning platform with two key parts. One is the hub, a library of machine learning models. For each model you can find out what tasks it can do, and other details such as its popularity and how it was trained. The other part is the Transformers library, which makes it easy to write code that uses one of these models. AI tasks can often be thought as transforming data: from text in one language to text in another, or from text to a list of topic labels, from an image to a textual description of that image, or from an image to a list of objects in that image, from audio to transcribed text, and so on. And all of these are tasks that can be useful in data journalism!

In this session we'll be following a tutorial that gives us an introduction to using Hugging Face to carry out these tasks.

All of our events are suitable for beginners, and no programming experience is required. Bring a laptop along as this a practical, hands-on workshop. Please also sign up for a Dropbox account if you don't already have one so you can edit the shared doc we'll be using during the event.

What is Journocoders? We are a community and monthly meetup for journalists and other people in the media who want to learn technical skills for use in their reporting -- and meet likeminded others.

Our events do often fill up, but if it's full please do join the waitlist as spaces do typically become available. And if you find you can no longer make it, please update your RSVP so someone else can take your spot.
