Visualising data with R and GGPlot

Details

This month we'll be learning how to create data visualisations using the R programming language and GGPlot.

R is used by teams in many newsrooms, and is known for its data analysis and data visualisation capabilities -- GGPlot is perhaps its most famous package, and can be used to create almost any type of chart imaginable.

In this session we'll be following a tutorial taking us through how to get started visualising data with GGPlot. We'll start with learning how to create a simple scatterplot, covering some of the fundamentals on the way. We'll then look at visualising distributions and relationships, as well as how to save out our plots and how to troubleshoot problems. We'll also have an additional tutorial for those who already have some familiarity with GGPlot and want to learn how to produce more advanced visualisations.

All of our events are suitable for beginners, and no programming experience is required. Bring a laptop along as this a practical, hands-on workshop. Please also sign up for a Dropbox account if you don't already have one so you can edit the shared doc we'll be using during the event.

What is Journocoders? We are a community and monthly meetup for journalists and other people in the media who want to learn technical skills for use in their reporting -- and meet likeminded others.

Our events do often fill up, but if it's full please do join the waitlist as spaces do typically become available. And if you find you can no longer make it, please update your RSVP so someone else can take your spot.
