This month we'll be learning how to build our own machine learning models with Python and Scikit Learn.

Scikit Learn is a popular library for building machine learning models which can then be used to generate predictions, find clusters of related data entries, and classify data into a set of categories. Scikit Learn runs on top of the Python programming language.

Machine learning has been used by journalists including the Washington Post who used app store reviews to look into online safety, Reveal who uncovered racial disparities in who was and wasn't rejected for mortgages and the LA Times who looked at how the police had misclassified serious assaults as minor crimes, skewing crime statistics.

In this session we'll be following a tutorial that covers how machine learning models work and how they are used. We'll build our own machine learning model using a decision tree algorithm to predict house prices based on various details.

All of our events are suitable for beginners, and no programming experience is required. Bring a laptop along as this a practical, hands-on workshop. Please also sign up for a Dropbox account if you don't already have one so you can edit the shared doc we'll be using during the event. You will also need to sign up for a Kaggle account.

What is Journocoders? We are a community and monthly meetup for journalists and other people in the media who want to learn technical skills for use in their reporting -- and meet likeminded others.

Our events do often fill up, but if it's full please do join the waitlist as spaces do typically become available. And if you find you can no longer make it, please update your RSVP so someone else can take your spot.
