We'll kick off our first meetup (well, our first on with not one, but two talks from the top 20 sessions of Devoxx Belgium 2017!

Krzysztof & Blazej from TomTom will talk about using machine learning to teach drones how to fly themselves, and Tim and Bert Jan will share all about about our RoboRace self-driving cars project.

Talk 1: (Deep) Learning to Fly

What does it take to make the machine understand its environment while moving around (or flying)? How to teach a drone to race on its own safely in unfriendly environment? During our talk, you will participate in all the stages of this exciting adventure from the first lines of code, through algorithmic struggles up to complete system ready to participate in the drone racing league.

About the speakers:

Krzysztof Kudrynski
8AM-4PM: Passionate problem solver with 10+ years experience in algorithms prototyping and software design, currently involved in projects related to self-driving cars in TomTom. 4PM-0AM: Loving husband and father of three 0AM-3AM: Enthusiast of technologies of the future including artificial intelligence, robotics and virtual reality. 3AM-8AM: Sleepwalker

Blazej Kubiak is enthusiast of all aspects of big data processing and all technologies that bring this enthusiasm from dream into reality. Blazej has been working in Tele Atlas and TomTom for eight years and has been involved in many challenging projects related to image and laser data processing. Blazej is one of the authors of automated traffic signs detection systems and bird-eye image mosaic creation tools. Currently he works as Expert Software Engineer in areas of Deep Neural Networks for object detection and recognition.

Talk 2: Building a self-driving RC car

This session will share our experiences in converting a small remote controlled car into an autonomous driving vehicle. We'll talk about electronics, sensors, AI, computer vision and of course, the software that ties everything together.
We'll introduce you into the world of self driving cars and compare our solution to the stuff that is done in the big leagues by the likes of Tesla's 'autopilot' and Waymo's self driving cars. We'll explain the challenges that have to be faced and the dilemma's that come with creating a car being driven by software in real world scenarios.

About the speakers:

Tim van Eijndhoven is a Software Craftsman at JPoint, currently working as an architect in an environment using an advanced reactive stack. Interested in anything software development related his main interests are on Java, software architecture, security and open source. Tim likes sharing his knowledge and experience with his fellow developers by writing articles and speaking at conferences. He tries to inspire future generations of developers by teaching kids how to code at events like Devoxx4Kids.

Bert Jan Schrijver is a Software Craftsman at JPoint and CTO at OpenValue. He focuses on Java, Continuous Delivery and DevOps. Bert Jan is a Java Champion, JavaOne Rock Star speaker and user group leader for NLJUG, the Dutch Java User Group. He loves to share his experience by speaking at conferences, writing for the Dutch Java magazine and helping out Devoxx4Kids with teaching kids how to code.
