Bioinformatics, Large Language Models (LLMs), AI for Science, and Makie

Details
Welcome to the first Julia programming meetup of the year! We will talk about all some hot topics, including large language models (LLMs), current topics in AI for bioinformatics, and the Makie plotting system! Check out the two talks and get some pizza!
First talk: Kevin Liu, Senior MLops Engineer at Johnson and Johnson
"AI-Powered Genomics: Leveraging DeepSeek and Julia for Human Genome Analysis"
Abstract: Advancements in artificial intelligence and high-performance computing are revolutionizing genomic research. This talk explores how DeepSeek AI and the Julia programming language can be combined to accelerate the analysis of the human genome. DeepSeek’s AI-driven capabilities enable rapid interpretation of genomic data, while Julia’s computational efficiency makes large-scale processing feasible. We will discuss key applications, including genomic variant analysis, functional genomics, and AI-assisted genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Through a live demonstration, we’ll showcase how DeepSeek can generate Julia code to process DNA sequences and model genetic interactions. This informal session will provide insights into how AI and HPC are shaping the future of precision medicine and bioinformatics.
Bio: Kevin Liu is a Machine Learning Engineer with expertise in AI and MLOps. With a background in building scalable AI/ML platforms, Kevin has worked extensively with AWS, Kubernetes, and Snowflake to deploy machine learning solutions in enterprise environments. Passionate about the intersection of AI and genomics, Kevin explores how DeepSeek and Julia can accelerate human genome research, particularly in genomic variant analysis, functional genomics, and AI-assisted bioinformatics.
Second Talk: Anshul Singhvi
"The power of Makie.jl"
Abstract: Explore the versatility of Makie.jl, from interactivity and Observables to 3D plotting. This talk will walk you through the core principles and mental framework you need to make blazing fast plots with Makie!
