The Rorschach Inkblots
And the Importance of Art In Therapy
Dr Chris Hodgson
Chris’ talk covers the early days of psychiatry when Carl Jung, Herman Rorschach and Eugene Bleuler worked together at the famous Burgholzli Asylum in Zurich. Tragically, Rorschach died prematurely at the age of 37 and never saw the full impact of the Rorschach Inkblot test which is still in use today.
Rorschach was an artist as well as a psychiatrist, and had he lived to a ripe old age, we can only guess at how his knowledge of art may have changed the way we practice psychotherapy. Chris will also discuss the work of contemporary Psychiatrist, Dr Ian McGilchrist, author of The Master and his Emissary. The importance of left and right brain thinking will be explored particularly concerning artistic appreciation and expression.
Chris will end his talk by discussing the potential use of A.I. techniques of art generation and their application to the therapeutic process.
Dr Chris Hodgson is a Psychiatrist who has worked in the Public Health System in WA for over 30 years. Chris is a Psychotherapy supervisor and lecturer with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. Chris is now branching into private practice and will soon commence a practice in Fremantle specialising in Psychotherapy.
