This presentation will explore unique characteristics of AI agents—dynamic entities capable of complex interactions and adaptations—and the limitations of traditional identity management systems that primarily cater to human and non-human identities. I will introduce the concept of ephemeral authentication, which provides short-lived, context-aware identities that align with the principle of least privilege, ensuring that AI agents receive only the permissions for their immediate tasks. I will highlight the challenges posed by conventional approaches, such as identity confusion, over-privileged access, and inadequate auditing, and propose solutions like just-in-time authorization and agent-specific authentication.
