Talk 2 (15 minutes) - "The inner thoughts of a product manager" by Edwar Zhang
Ever wonder what the software development lifecycle looks like through the eyes of a product manager? From what angle we consider an opportunity? At what points do product and engineering come together? In this talk we take a trip through a companies planning cycle and step through the phases an idea goes through and how product and engineering collaborate.
A bit about Walter Lim
Walt has traversed the spectrum of UX Research, Product Design, and UX Engineering, while delivering working products that make a difference in the lives of people. He has worked across a spectrum of organizations, ranging from multinational corporations to small startups, gaining invaluable perspectives along the way.
With a diverse portfolio of work, Walt has targeted and implemented usability and accessibility improvements for consumer-facing products in large corporations. He has contributed to B2B SaaS startups, helping them reduce churn and rapidly introduce new features through a seamless integration of research, design, and code deliverables. He has been featured on publications like The Verge, Engadget, Gizmodo, Stuff, and The Project
Walt is also well-versed on the limitations and trade-offs between different research and testing methodologies. He understands the implications of using unmoderated user research with Figma prototypes versus moderated usability testing with static React prototypes lacking a backend. His expertise ensures more accurate results, especially in scenarios where user input plays a critical role.
At the core of Walt's philosophy is the belief that delivering useful and impactful outcomes for users is paramount. He recognises that a company and its team earn their social license to operate by prioritizing the needs and aspirations of their users.
