Talk 1: Introduction to SRE & Observability by Stephen Townshend
Traditionally there has been a chasm between the people who develop software (dev) and the people to run it (ops). SRE is the Google approach to bridging that gap which has since spread globally. It's "what you get when you treat operations as a software problem, and staff it with software engineers". In this talk we'll cover the principles and practices of SRE and how that translates into the real messy world we work in.
A bit about Stephen:
- He is a tech manager based out of Auckland. His technical background is in performance engineering and SRE, and now he leads engineering teams. He's currently the SRE & DevOps Team Lead at Bluecurrent. Stephen trained to be a professional and has found podcasting as a way to blend technology and creativity. He hosts the Slight Reliability podcast which has over 116 episodes published with guests from all over the world
Talk 2: I Didn’t Plan This: How I Accidentally Ended Up in Governance by Kiran Chandradevan
- A light‑hearted but honest look at his very non‑linear journey into governance and risk. Starting in computer science, his path shifted through mental‑health research then machine‑learning work before ending up somewhere he never planned. He’ll share the missteps, surprises, and lessons he wishes he’d known earlier, especially for anyone wondering where a tech career can unexpectedly take you.
A bit about Kiran:
- He is the Technology Risk Lead at NZAA, with an academic background in Economics and Software Development. After a few unexpected turns, he now works in technology risk and governance, showing that tech careers don’t always follow a straight line. He spends most of his time translating technical reality into decisions leaders can actually act on.
