Telephone Cove, Nevada Camp & Paddle(with a TWIST!)
Details
Join us for a relaxing weekend kayaking, hiking and chillin' with no cell service.
Telephone Cove, NV, near Laughlin, is an easy, scenic, 4 hour drive from Phoenix.
Plenty of free camping right on the water so you can launch from your campsite!
•This will be an uncomplicated and relaxing weekend of paddling up the Colorado River, exploring coves along the Nevada shoreline then crossing over the river to explore the coves on the Arizona side of the river before returning to camp.
•Bring hiking boots/shoes and possibly a pole/stick for a 5 mile slot canyon hike from the campground. It's a gradual uphill in a some sand, but an easy fast downhill on the return.
•If you want to show up on Thursday to get a jump on the weekend, feel free to leave a comment below so others will be looking for you, otherwise Friday is a good day to come too.
•We'll do a group paddle on Saturday morning around 9 am.
Camp area along the beach:
Regarding facilities, the Nevada Telephone Cove has four restrooms that are well maintained and very tidy. There is also a large dumpster for trash disposal.
As there is no water on-site, you will have to bring it along. Park rangers also patrol the facility about two to three times daily.
•Little to no cell service.
What to bring:
•PFD/life jacket, paddle, kayak
•Camping gear
•Firewood
•Binoculars
•Favorite book or game
•Food and water for the weekend
•Camp chair/table/shade
•Hiking gear - boots, pole, water bottle, hat, sunglasses, binoculars
Directions:
After crossing the bridge to Laughlin, continue west on Hwy 163 for about 4.4 miles to the 2nd right turn after crossing the bridge into NV. Turn right (NE) onto Nevada Telephone Cove Rd and make another quick right onto the dirt road. The (somewhat) maintained dirt road, sedan worthy, continues downward for about 4.3 miles. Stay on the main road (there's a slight right partway down the road, don't take it). You will end up in the wide beachy camping area. Turn sort of left and pick someplace near trees about 1/2 way down the beach, but not directly in front of restrooms or dumpster.
This road is not suitable for large campers due to the twists and "bumps"
••NOW, HERE'S THE TWIST MENTIONED IN THE TITLE
•Weather permitting, whoever would like to paddle upstream and do kayak camping along the secluded beaches for any or all of the nights, will be an option departing Friday morning. This would be a very flexible plan, so come prepared for that option if you want to take it. I'm sure there will be plenty of people who will opt to stay at 'base camp' in the cove, while some of us head upstream for unknown adventures.
•We hope to see you on this one! You could use a good paddling!
