Is multitasking a myth?
Founders need to work on one thing at a time. But in reality they work on everything at once. People may say that they are excellent at multitasking but let's break that down and try to understand what they really mean.
Multitasking can take one of three forms.
The first
Parallel processing, have you seen anyone watching a movie while surfing the web? working on two or more unrelated tasks that are performed in parallel.
The second
Task Switching, like taking feedback from clients, turning feedback into action and getting back. Yet, the focus remains on one task at a time - what people call multitasking. Most task management systems are built around this idea.
Finally
true multitasking, where two or more tasks are performed at the same time. With focus on both.
I looked it up, the term was not intended to mean a persons ability at all. It was initially used in the 1950's to talk about a new capability in computers.
No one thought to apply it to humans!
That didn’t happen until the 1990s, when the word started showing up in résumés.
By then, personal computers were everywhere — and so was the metaphor.
You didn’t just use a multitasking machine.
You were expected to be one.
Some of those machines even advertised it:
“Multitasking capable!”
As if the same logic could be applied to people.
