About us

Our Centre was established in 1996, under the direction of our Founder, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche. We are a charitable non-profit organization. Our goal is to provide people in the Ottawa area with an opportunity to practise Buddha’s teachings, to help them to solve their daily problems and find lasting happiness. (To learn more about Our Founder, Our Teachers, and Modern Kadampa Buddhism, click here.)
Our general meditation classes teach practical methods to improve the quality and meaning of life through developing inner peace, compassion and wisdom. We also offer more advanced classes for those wishing to deepen their understanding and practice of Buddhism.
Our Centre has a beautiful meditation room, where our classes are held. While most people sit in chairs when attending our classes, we can provide you with a meditation cushion to sit on, if you’d like one. We also offer a small bookshop/gift shop, and a quiet reading area.
You don’t need to be a Buddhist to attend our classes, or to benefit from them. Everyone is welcome here.

Death & Dying - A Buddhist Perspective With Gen Kelsang Thekchen

Kadampa Meditation Centre Ottawa, 879 Somerset St W, Ottawa, ON, CA

Understanding death and the process of dying is important both for ourselves and our loved ones.

We are alive, therefore we shall die. Awareness of this process will help us to come to terms with our own and others' mortality, live a more meaningful and positive life now and most importantly know what to do when we are dying so we can die peacefully and happily without regrets.

In this half day course, Gen Thekchen will explain Buddha’s unparalleled insight into death and dying.

He will also give us some essential instructions to help those who are dying, which is one of the kindest things we can do, at their greatest moment of need. Finally Gen Thekchen will introduce a special practice called Transference of Consciousness or "Powa" that can transfer the consciousness of the deceased to a Buddha's pure land. There will be an opportunity to engage in this practice at the end of the day.
