Derek Troy-West, CEO, Factor House

Bio:
Derek is a Co-Founder and CEO of Factor House and has a background in finance and distributed systems.
He began working with Apache Kafka, Cassandra, and Storm in 2012 and runs Melbourne Distributed, a meetup for engineers interested in distributed systems.

Talk:
Building fast, ad-hoc, multi-topic Kafka search with integrated JQ filtering

Abstract:
In this session we will take a look at the implementation of the ad-hoc, multi-topic Kafka search function in Kpow Community Edition.

Kpow's Data Inspect functionality rests on a data-oriented, custom parallel Kafka consumer implementation fronted by a similarly data-oriented re-frame / react UI. We'll cover the basic requirements, trade-offs, and jump into the details including Derek's favourite ever coding exercise - implementing JSON Query (JQ) message filters on the JVM.

Warren Vella, Solutions Engineer, Confluent

Bio:
Warren Vella is obsessed with integration, which started off as a 13-year adventure at the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), where he supported and architected critical energy market integration platforms. After moving from operations into enterprise architecture, he joined Confluent as a Solutions Engineer, helping customers solve their integration challenges.
Warren has worked on various platforms like API Gateways, ETLs, ESBs, Message Queues, iPaaS and Data Streaming Platforms. His mission? To educate the world on removing the bottleneck of integration.

Kafka Unleashed: Fusing the gap between Operational and Analytical systems

Abstract:
In this talk, Warren will unleash the power of Kafka - a tool that fuses the integration gap between operational and analytical systems. Buckle up as Warren takes us on a journey on why the current approach to integration is suboptimal to a future where integration is no longer a bottleneck.
