This is a short countryside walk that will go to few important sites that show the history of the airfield that was built in Nara during World War 2.

The airfield was called “Yanagimoto
Airstrip” 大和航空基地(柳本飛行場)跡地

There were plans for a few airplane runways, but it seems two were only made in the end.

The runways are now long gone, but you’ll hopefully get a sense of the vast area that it was going to take up.

It has a bit of negitive history to it. This is due to the way it was built and the people involved, but even so, it’s important to remember the past so we dont make the same mistakes in the future.

We’ll also visit two bunkers. I have permission from a local farmer to visit, so we can get up close and explore them.

One bunker is impressive, but mostly used as farming storage, but we can climb on top, if you like.

The other bunker we can go inside if you feel brave. It is structurally sound, but is no longer maintained inside or out, so who knows what might be lurking inside. Haha.
No need to really worry though. I’ve been inside and will go in first to check it’s safe for you too. Bring a flashlight !! 🔦

We’ll be walking in the summer heat 🌞 😓 along some beautiful countryside rice fields 🌾 🍚
Make sure you dress for the heat and bring plenty of liquids. However there are vending machines along the way if you need.

We’ll meet at JR Nara Station at 9:30am to catch the train that leaves at 9:42am. Please arrive on time!

We should be able to get back to JR Nara Station by 12:40pm, so you can enjoy lunch in Nara and head off to explore the park or whatever afterwards! Make a day of it!!

Participation fee is ¥700 per person, ¥500 if there are more than 10 people. Exact change would be appreciated.
As per usual, all travel costs are to be covered by yourself.

Let me know if you have any questions or requests.
