Rocannon, a scientist from the League of All Worlds, is conducting an ethnological survey on Fomalhaut II, a planet inhabited by three distinct humanoid races. When a fleet of alien ships invades the planet, Rocannon's research team is killed, and his spaceship is destroyed. Marooned and the sole survivor, he must lead the planet's primitive inhabitants in a fight against the invaders. His goal is to reach the enemy's base, use their ansible to send a message to the League, and secure help for the beleaguered world.
