Film of the month:
[?]* (Directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, 1987; 2h 42 m; FSK: ab 12)
Sweeping docu-drama about the life and times of Puyi, the last emperor of China, who ascended the Dragon Throne at the age of three and was deposed at the age of six by the Chinese Revolution. The erstwhile emperor eventually learned to be a gardener and an ordinary citizen. Gorgeously filmed on location in the People’s Republic of China with authentic costumes and a cast of thousands. This was the first Western movie permitted to be filmed inside the Forbidden City. Based on Puyi’s 1964 autobiography. Awarded 9 Oscars. Starring John Lone, Joan Chen and Peter O’Toole.
“An awesome spectacle, a work of art, and a turbulent historical drama.”
– Joseph Gelmis, Newsday
“Bertolucci's gorgeous and seductive [?]* imbues this powerless and constantly thwarted figure with a resolute if melancholy grace.”
– MaryAnn Johanson, Flick Filosopher
“It's a film of such polyphonic richness, so full of history (both personal and political) and imagery, that pieces of it continue to reverberate off one another in your memory for days after you've seen it.”
– Jim Emerson, Orange County Register
Shown in English. Admission is free.
