Alsace/Rhine hike: Seltz, ferry and Rastatt palace - 9 km
Details
We're going to Alsace again, this time taking the ferry near Rastatt. Before going there, we're going to take some time to walk around the palace park in Rastatt. I bet some of us haven't had enough of pink blossoms yet. (I can't promise there will be blossoms though.) We're going to have a nice short hike in Alsace and go to the small town of Seltz - maybe we'll find a nice cafe there.
This is a very easy hike, almost completely flat. That means it's good for beginners, too.
Getting there:
- From Karlsruhe Hbf: take RE2 on platform 12, departing 11:09
- From Rastatt Bahnhof we'll walk to the Palace Park, then take a bus to Plittersdorf.
- 1.5 km walk from Plittersdorf to the ferry (no ticket required).
- ferry across the Rhine.
- Coming by car? You can join us at the ferry (Baden or Alsace side, as you prefer) or in Rastatt.
What to bring:
- water and snacks
- weather-appropriate clothing, umbrella
- Normal shoes should be enough for this one. We might encounter mud, though.

Some historical background on Seltz in Alsace (from Wikipedia):
The former Celtic settlement of Saliso near a crossing of the Rhine river was mentioned as the Roman castrum Saletio in the Notitia Dignitatum about 425. Later a part of the German stem duchy of Swabia, Emperor Otto I granted the area to his wife Adelaide of Burgundy in 968. Saint Adelaide established Selz Abbey in 991 and died here eight years later.
In 1357 Emperor Charles IV of Luxembourg raised Selz to an Imperial city, after which the town joined the Alsatian Décapole league. It however lost its immediate status in 1414, when it was mediatised by Elector Palatine Louis III of Wittelsbach. Seltz finally was annexed by France in 1680.
