Awakening the Heart of Society : Navigating Difficult Times

Details

Navigating Difficult Times

These times of intense social disruption trigger distress, anxiety, and a sense of personal powerlessness. We are affected daily by the dynamics of a society that seems caught in a web of fear, materialism and conflict. It is hard to know the best way to respond.

The Hidden Goodness

Within Ourselves & Society

Yet, the Buddhist and Shambhala teachings take the view that humans are basically good and fundamentally awake. It is our habits and assumptions that make these qualities difficult to access. The same is true for our society. The potential to live in a caring and connected way with others is inherently present, but it is usually covered over by deeply embedded patterns, emotional reactivity and fixed assumptions.

A Path Leading Forward

Fortunately, our spiritual traditions offer us the means to awaken our fundamental nature of kindness, awareness, and connection. Together with our own experiences and insights, these skillful means provide us with a personal path forward. And our individual path forms the basis for how we approach issues at the societal level. We'll see this during the weekend as we explore the relationships between:

  • Self trust and mutual trust
  • An open mind and shared learning
  • Genuine insight and true communication

Social Practices for a Positive Future

We will use the resources of trust, learning, and communication to explore social practices that lead us towards respect & inclusivity, acknowledging the past & caring for the future, being able to collaborate successfully, and crafting sustainable economies. As we deepen our understanding of these practices and share them with others, we actively create the conditions for our society to reach its fullest, positive potential.

Applying This to the Real World

How do we take this back into our life and out into the world? At the end of the weekend we will each reflect on how going forward, we can individually and together as a learning community, nurture the awake potential of our basically good human society.
