About us
General meetings, committee meetings, discussions, social gatherings, etc of the two Sierra Club groups in the Kansas City metro area, the Thomas Hart Benton group (Missouri) and the Kanza group (Kansas).
Leadership Responsibility
Each Sierra Club post on this Meetup is created and led by an individual Event Host, who is solely responsible for planning, safety, decision‑making, and compliance with Sierra Club policies for their specific activity. Meetup role titles such as Organizer, Co‑Organizer, Assistant Organizer, or Event Host are administrative designations used only within the Meetup platform and do not represent official Sierra Club positions or authority. The Organizer does not supervise, vet, approve, or manage Sierra Club trip leaders, performs only basic Meetup site upkeep, and does not assume responsibility for leader decisions, outing content, or policy compliance. All questions or concerns about a particular post should be directed to that outing’s Event Host.
If you're looking for outdoor activities - hiking, backpacking, service opportunities, etc - check out our Sierra Club | Kansas City | Backpacking | Hiking | Service Meetup Group.
You do not have to be a Sierra Club member to join this meetup group or participate in the outings, though we welcome you to join for as little as $15.

Franque Bains, Sierra Club Utah Chapter Director
“Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is one of Utah’s treasures. Not only is it important for scientific research, preserving Native American history and culture, and biodiversity–it has proven to be an economic success for the community. Support for the local economy will be undercut if the lands that bring visitors are damaged.”At our monthly Sierra Club general meetings, we talk about Organizing to Protect and Defend America's Public Lands. Here is this month's action that we can each do before our next meeting on March 24.
Congress could soon vote to undermine protections for Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. This would overturn the current Grand Staircase-Escalante Monument Management Plan, and constitutes a serious threat with implications for all national monuments and their respective management plans.
Designated in 1996, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument protects nearly 1.9 million acres of extraordinary landscapes in southern Utah -- home to towering stone arches, winding slot canyons, dinosaur fossils, and cultural and archaeological sites of deep importance to Native American Tribes. It is a sanctuary for wildlife, a place of dark skies and quiet, and is enjoyed by around a million visitors each year.
Send a message to Congress urging them to vote NO on this reckless resolution and defend Grand Staircase-Escalante.
Please go here ASAP to take action: sc.org/protectgse.Thank you for helping with this action and we look forward to seeing you at our next general meeting on March 24.
