What is the Braw Lad's Gathering?
A ceremonial ride out, established in 1930 to commemorate events and associations in the history of the town, dating back to the 13th and 14th century . The townspeople would ride their boundaries to protect their common lands and prevent encroachment by neighbouring landlords.
This annual event starts at 8am with the Braw Lad receiving the town flag from the burgh chambers, before he, the Braw Lass and around 300 horses and riders carry it around the town boundaries. We will watch the riders along Abbotsford Road, cross the River Tweed to visit Abbotsford House, Gallop across Gala Hill and up Scott Street (performing ceremonies on the way) . The event ends at 12 noon and is followed by music in Bank Street Gardens and much revelry (AKA drinking!!) .
We will meet in Abbotsford Terrace (TD1 3BZ) (opposite the public park), where you will be able to park if you arrive by 7.45 am. Watch the horses and town and pipe bands pass by, go to the banks of the Tweed to watch the riders cross, wander up Gala Hill to see the horses Gallop, catch the end of the mixing of the roses, watch the horse gallop up Scott Street and return to the town clock for the mixing of the roses.
If you want to remain for the festivities I suggest we then go the the town fountain - bringing a folding chair is recommended so that we can sit and have a drink/picnic or purchase food from stalls. You can bring your own bottle. This area is next to the Salmon Inn so you can purchase drinks from the bar.
Last year we ended up in Quin's restaurant for food so if people are still around early evening we can do that too.
Check Borders Buses for timetables and Borders railway for train times from Edinburgh.
If it has been raining the river bank can be muddy so wear appropriate footwear.
Look forward to seeing you then. Alison :-)
