The greatest novel to come out of WWI, Erich Maria Remarque’s Im Westen nichts Neues became an Academy Award-winning US movie in 1930, just a year after it was published. Remarkably, it is only now, more than a century after the war, that a German filmmaker has tackled the book (ironically, from a screenplay by an American and a Brit). Edward Berger’s epic is a magnificent, heartbreaking movie, a devastating chronicle of idealistic young men duped into signing up for the slaughterhouse of the trenches. That its release coincides with the biggest European war in 70 years is tragic in itself.
Too young to enlist in 1917, Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer) forges his father’s signature and within hours he and his school friends have been kitted out with (secondhand) uniforms and rifles. But their romantic notions of bringing glory to the fatherland don’t outlast their first day on the front lines. The trenches are an open tomb, and they’re the walking dead. Survival is a matter of keeping your head buried in the mud and pure dumb luck. Bäumer makes it through the first onslaught, but the next day will bring more terror, and the day after that, if he lives that long.
Vivid and authentic, and very moving in its depiction of comradeship, All Quiet on the Western Front is a fittingly bitter commemoration of what they used to the call “the war to end all wars”.
