Kitchener Coffee & Conversation - Identity

Details
Who are you? That’s not necessarily a philosophical question, although it could be if you want. Let’s explore the topic of Identity this week by looking at the various identities we take on and their impact on our experience.
When I looked up the difference between personality and identity, AI said that personality refers more to character traits and behaviours, while identity connects to our self-concept in relation to broader social groups and structures and the roles we play within them.
Here’s a few questions that can help us get the conversation started….
-
What ideas, beliefs, values, groups, roles, abilities and experiences do you identify with? Which of these identities are chosen, and which have you taken on based on how society or others define you?
-
Have you ever tried to break out of an old identity and/or build a new one? How did that go?
-
How do identities support us when engaging with the world and in what ways can they limit our experience?
I think by sharing about the identities we embrace, as well as the identities we are trying to let go of, we can find more clarity within ourselves and help others understand us better. So no matter how you define yourself, you’re invited to join us for what I expect to be an insightful conversation. See you Thursday!
LOCATION:
To accommodate our growing numbers and need for a quieter space we will be meeting in a church community hall listed below (this is not a religious gathering).
Community Hall
414 Fisher-Hallman Rd (view map)
Kitchener, ON N2M 4Y1
NOTE: The RSVPs here represent only some who may attend this recurring discussion group (such as 1st timers) along with regular attending members who may not RSVP here.
In this safe, inclusive, casual, and accepting environment, dialogue is encouraged over debate. No particular set of beliefs (or creed) is required. Whether to discover yourself amidst a community on a common journey or to find meaning among new friends, there is room at the table for you.
See you there!
