KW Film Nights American Fiction (2023)
Details
This April, we’re gathering to watch American Fiction — a sharp, funny, and deeply layered satire about storytelling, identity, and the boxes we’re asked to fit into.
Written and directed by Cord Jefferson in his feature debut, the film follows a frustrated novelist who, tired of seeing reductive “Black trauma” narratives celebrated by the publishing industry, writes a deliberately outrageous parody under a pseudonym… only to watch it become a massive success.
What unfolds is a story that’s both biting and tender about art, authenticity, family, grief, and the tension between who we are and what the world rewards.
What to Expect
- A cozy screening space with snacks and drinks
- A small group of people who enjoy sitting with a film a little longer
- A thoughtful, low-pressure discussion after the screening
- No film expertise required — just curiosity
After the film, we’ll talk about:
- Authenticity vs. performance
- Who gets to tell what stories and why
- The pressures of representation
- Family, grief, and creative identity
No pressure to speak — listening is just as welcome.
Seats are limited, so please RSVP to save your spot.
Come as you are. Let’s watch something smart, uncomfortable, and unexpectedly moving together
