ONE COLORFUL AND EASY SHOALWATER BAY LOOP HIKE ALONG THE KLAMATH LAKE

Details

This loop hike is for advanced beginners. It has a 4.5-mile total distance, and a 350 ft slow elevation gain and slow elevation loss. This hike has lots of rest stops which will allow you to see and enjoy the pretty Klamath Lake as well as the mountains in the background. Bring your camera, you may see places where picture opportunities are spectacular.

Our first, 1.6 miles are along the bay on a nice flat trail. After that we cross the cinder road and hike up on a nice forestry trail with lots of shade and pretty views . After 1.3 miles we encounter a junction that has places to sit down. This is our rest stop and lunch spot. After lunch we continue our hike for the last 1.6 miles. It is mostly downhill and has some switchbacks taking us back to the trail head.

TIMING : We will meet at the Showalter Trail head at 10:00AM. Our weather this Labor Day Monday will be warm with a temperature of 75 deg and sunny. A possible afternoon shower is forecasted so please bring your water proof wind jacket.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: We will meet at our Moore Park meetup at 9:30 AM and caravan to our trailhead, the Shoal water Bay TH. From our meet up location, we turn right on lake shore road and follow it to highway 140. We pass the Running Y and continue through the road construction section, which is closed on Sundays, then drive over the Doak mountain pass. As you start arriving at the bottom of the hill, where the 3 lanes turn into 2, slowdown and look for a sign saying, " EAGLE RIDGE COUNTY PARK'. Turn right on the good gravel road and follow the signs to the Shoal water Bay Trail Head. This is a 2.1-mile drive. Follow the signs to a large parking lot with bathrooms on your left side. Plenty of parking spaces. You may also drive directly to the TH from Klamath Falls and meet us there at 10 AM,

FROM MEDFORD, Take highway 140 for 59 miles towards Klamath Falls.
Just before you start up the Doak mountain hill, where the road turns right and the 2-lane highway becomes 3-lanes, look for a sign that says, " EAGLE RIDGE COUNTY PARK". Turn left on this gravel road for 2.1 miles to the Shoal water Trail Head. If you were to leave at 8:30 AM from Medford, you should have ample time to get to the TH by 10:00 AM.

DO BRING ON THIS HIKE: Sturdy hiking boots, hiking poles are optional, a waterproof wind jacket, long pants and long sleeve shirt, hat, sunglasses, lots of water, electrolytes, lunch, cell phone.
