A SHADY FOREST HIKE ON CLOSED ROADS AND THE PCT TO VULTURE ROCKS

Details
Another terrific hike in the old Baldy Mountain Forested area. This hike starts and ends a few miles south from the Pedersen Snow Park on Dead Indian Highway located halfway between Klamath Falls and Medford.
This is a moderate hike of 3 miles one way for a total of 6 miles. There is a 400 ft elevation gain and loss. We start hiking on a good gravel road closed to vehicular traffic for 1.8 miles. Expect a 250 ft elevation gain during this section. Next, we take a short spur trail section of .1 mile and 150 ft up to reach the Pacific Crest Trail. We turn left on it and continue another .1mile to a very pretty viewpoint on the PCT. After a short break we continue on the PCT heading down into open view areas for .7 miles to a sign that shows a left turn to Vulture Rock. We continue on this trail for .25 miles where the trail ends at the base of Vulture Rock. This is our lunch spot. You will have the option to have lunch at the shady base overlooking Vulture Rocks or hike up on many rocks to one terrific viewpoint. Please note that hiking on these rocks is a Class 1+ scramble. A large number of these rocks are loose and can cause injury if you slip and fall. Be very careful if you choose to hike on the rocks.
After lunch and some exploration time we return on the same trail and roads. This is not a loop hike. We hiked the entire trail this week and found it to be in very good condition.
The forecast for Sunday's hiking weather is sunny and light winds and warmer than average temperatures of 77 deg. There is a lot of shade on this hike and also sunny sections on this hike.
We will meet up at 9:00 AM at the Moore Park Marina, then carpool to our second meet up point the PEDERSEN SNOW PARK on Dead Indian Memorial Highway arriving by 9:55 AM. You may also choose to drive directly to the snow park and meet us there at 9:55 AM. Once all our hikers have arrived, by 10 AM we will all drive together south 3 miles
on the paved Burton Flat Road at mile post 3 we turn right on a gravel road for .5 miles to our Trail Head.
Hikers coming from Medford or Ashland, allow an hour for traveling the 27 miles on Dead Indian Memorial Highway. Meet us at 10 AM at Pedersen.
Do bring with you on this hike: cool clothes, long sleeve and long pants, hat, sunglasses, sunblock, WATER, electrolytes like Gator Lyte and lunch. Good hiking boots are recommended as well as hiking poles. Cell phones/ camera are fine.
Dogs are fine on this hike, since there is lots of shade on this hike, but also some sunny and warm hiking spots, especially in the early afternoon hours. There are no mosquitos, and no available water.
