Since the road to the promised hike of Mt Scott is still closed due to the east side construction, we will be hiking the crater peak hike which has great views of Mt Scott. The moderate hike to the summit of crater lake peak, a small extinct shield volcano is inside of the crater lake national park. At the summit we will follow the loop trail, on its caldera which is almost flat around its ridge, in a counterclockwise direction. This will allow us to complete a 360 deg view of the park on the south side of the park at an elevation of 7200 ft. Plan on having lunch along a breath-taking spot on the ridge line trail.

This is a moderate hike of 6.4 miles round trip and 700 ft elevation gain. The trail starts at the Videa Falls parking area and follows the Videa Ridge line through Tututni Pass to Crater Peak. There is a small steep uphill section at the beginning of the hike, followed by a long shaded mostly flat section, and ending in a last short and moderately steep uphill section. We will be out of the woods at the summit, so bring your camera and you will be able to take many pretty photos.

We will meet up at the Moore Park Marina Lake side at 8 30 AM for carpooling to crater lake. This is a 60+ mile drive on highway 97 north followed by a right turn on highway 62. After you turn right to enter the park and before you go past the entrance booth stop to meet up in the parking area at Annie Creek. Hikers from the Medford area will meet us at this location. Hikers wishing to drive directly to this spot should arrive there by 10 AM.

From Annie Creek we will drive 3 miles into the park then turn right on east rim drive continuing for 3 miles just past Videa falls. Look for a sign that shows parking for a picnic area, Videa Falls and Crater Peak. Turn right going down the hill for .1 miles to a multi section loop parking area with rest rooms in the center. This is our trail head.

After our hike, those hikers interested in seeing the Phantom Ship on the crater lake, there will a possible short side trip hike after our hike.
You will need to drive an additional 1.5 miles on the east rim drive to the Sun Notch parking area. From there we will do a .8-mile loop hike.

Please wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt. Also, bring sturdy hiking boots, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, hiking poles, water, electrolytes, lunch and by all means a cell phone with camera.
Our Sunday weather looks good with sun in the morning followed by clouds in the late afternoon. We will have some winds out of the north west at the summit. Dogs are not allowed in Crater Lake. For questions please call me at 541 273 2479....... Hans
