This is an advanced beginner hike at a slow pace with stops. It consists of a 3.2-mile distance one way on a good trail. We will pause to see several craters along our trail. There is a little uphill and downhill on our trail, maybe a total of 200 ft. All of the hike with the exception of the last .4 miles is on a soft pumice trail. The last section is an easy cross-country hike along open terrain, taking us to our lunch stop located in between the 3 sisters as shown in the picture. At our lunch break you may call it quits or take the time to visit any or all of the close by 3 sisters. We will have an extended lunch break of one half hour. After lunch we will return the same way.

Do bring solid hiking boots. Poles are optional for this hike unless you hike to the summit of any of the 3 sisters where poles will keep you from falling as you are going up or down. I do expect that this leisurely hike will take about 3 .5 hours which includes the half hour for lunch.

Our Lava Beds weather looks good at this time. Mostly sunny and a high of 44 deg and light winds.
I would suggest a warm wind breaker , a long sleeve shirt and long pants and warm gloves. Sunscreen and a hat are recommended and will help keep you from getting too much sun. Sunglasses are a wonderful idea since it is going to bright beautiful day.
Do bring Water, the lava beds are dry. Lunch and snacks are fine. Gator aid or a drink that have electrolytes would be good.

We will meet at the Klamath Community College south parking area B
at 9.30 AM. Use the second entrance on the south side, then turn right and right again. From there we will caravan to the visitor center at the Lava Beds, a 40-mile drive. We need to check in, obtain a pass and use the heated rest rooms. From there we will drive to the Skull Cave trailhead which is about a 4-mile drive. This is where we will start and finish our hike. Please note that dogs are not permitted in the lava beds.
