ONE COLORFUL AND EASY SHOALWATER BAY LOOP HIKE ALONG THE KLAMATH LAKE
Details
This pretty hike has two difficulty levels for hikers. The easy beginner section consists of hiking on the old eagle trail along the shoalwater bay of the klamath lake on a mainly level and good trail for 1.6 miles to where the trail crosses the cinder road. You then can return the same way for a total of 3.2 miles back to our Trail Head.
The advanced beginner section consists of a loop hike which has a 4.5-mile total distance, and a 330 ft slow elevation change. This hike on the shoalwater trail starts at the end of the 1.6 mile beginners hike , crosses the cinder road and goes up a lightly uphill 1.3 miles to a trail junction. From there the same trail goes on at a nice and easy 1.6 mile downhill trail with lots of switchbacks which takes us back to our parking lot and Trail Head. There are several places along this trail where we will stop and rest and see the pretty Klamath Lake as well as the mountains in the background. Bring your camera, you may see places where picture opportunities are just totally spectacular.
TIMING : We will meet at the Shoalwater Trail Head at 12:30 PM. Our weather this Sunday will be pleasant with a temperature of 61 deg , partly cloudy and light breezy.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS: We will meet at our Moore Park meetup at 12:00 NOON and caravan to our Shoalwater Bay Trail Head . From Moore Park we turn right on lake shore road and follow it to highway 140. We pass by the Running Y and continue over the Doak mountain pass. As you start arriving at the bottom of the hill, where the 3 lanes turn into 2, slowdown and look for a sign saying, " EAGLE RIDGE COUNTY PARK'. Turn right on this very good gravel road and follow the signs to the Shoalwater Bay Trail Head. This is a 2.1-mile drive. Follow the signs to a large parking lot with bathrooms on your left side. Plenty of parking spaces.
FROM MEDFORD, Take highway 140 for 59 miles towards Klamath Falls.
Just before you start up the Doak mountain hill, where the road turns right and the 2-lane highway becomes 3-lanes, look for a sign that says, " EAGLE RIDGE COUNTY PARK". Turn left on this gravel road for 2.1 miles to the Shoal water Trail Head. If you were to leave around 11 AM from Medford, you should have ample time to get to the Trail Head.
DO BRING ON THIS HIKE: Sturdy hiking boots, hiking poles are optional, a wind jacket, long pants and long sleeve shirt, hat, sunglasses, lots of water, electrolytes, lunch, cell phone.
